West Wight Greenway - work in progress
The West Wight Greenway has been a long standing and much wanted West Wight community priority. It was to be the signature project of the West Wight Landscape Project and the focus of repeated regeneration meetings/workshops.
For a number of years Natural Enterprise has been working with partners to make the Greenway a reality. Several previous unsuccessful initiatives failed to reconcile the needs of the landowners/user and route users.
The West Wight Greenway will establish the important link between one of our key gateways (Yarmouth) and our County Town (Newport) and make it possible to travel across the Island east to west, and to join the NCN23, which runs between the north and south coasts.
It is hoped that the Greenway’s first phase between Freshwater Bay and Wellow will be completed by Spring 2025.
The Isle of Wight is the nation’s “Bicycle Island” and is the premier destination for walking and cycling, previously voted as one of the top 10 places in the world to explore by bike by Lonely Planet. There are 517 miles (827 km) of public rights of way, the most concentrated public right of way network in England, but only 27.5 miles (5% of public rights of way) of cycle and horse-riding routes.
One of the reasons why the West Wight Greenway has been a long-standing priority for so many is its ability to positively benefit islanders of all ages, backgrounds and interests.
