Invasive Non-native Species
An invasive non-native species is any non-native animal or plant that has the ability to spread causing damage to the environment, the economy, our health and the way we live.
Natural Enterprise are leading the campaign to remove Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed from the Island’s Eastern Yar and Medina River catchments. Japanese knotweed causes structural damage, and Himalayan balsam is detrimental to native flora and fauna and is a cause of flooding.
Our annual Himalayan balsam campaign runs from May to September and involves volunteers hand-pulling the invasive plant.
In addition to our Invasive Non-Native Species campaign, we are working alongside local landowners to improve the restored habitat for water voles.
